The innovation principle
Munich, January 24th 2009. Horst Zuse’s new online cube by IT2 media enables him to present to his website visitors his extensive range of information within a limited space - while maintaining a clearly comprehensible layout. He believes the use of this innovative feature suits him very well - and is also very much in the tradition of his father Konrad Zuse who build the world’s first ever functional computer.
“When I saw the cube for the first time, I immediately wanted to get one,” says Horst Zuse, remembering his first encounter with AD3D, the latest development by Munich-based IT service provider IT2media. The idea of using three-dimensional shapes for advertising space instantly seemed logical to Zuse, a lecturer in practical computer studies at Berlin Technical University and Honorary Professor at Lausitz Technical College: “On my website I offer a range of information for very diverse target groups. With the AD3D cube I have finally managed to present the various sections clearly within a limited space.” Each of the six spaces gives visitors to the website a swift overview: lectures, DVDs, brochures, photos, art prints, original prospectuses issued by Zuse KG and much more besides. In addition to the purely practical benefits, Horst Zuse loves the look of the cube: “The slowly revolving cube is nice to look at - it looks as if it were flying through the universe.”
The cube with its six advertising spaces is very much in the innovative tradition of Zuse’s father: even back in the age of punch tape, the legendary inventor and entrepreneur Konrad Zuse had the idea of using computers not just for calculating but for drawing and depicting visual elements, too. “In 1941 he built the world’s first ever functional computer (Z3) and spent much of his life looking for innovative solutions to a whole range of problems. I’m sure he would have been very taken with the cube.” This constant appetite for innovation was clearly something which Zuse senior passed onto his son. As a child, the latter had access to all the computer components of Zuse KG and loved to experiment with them. For example, he used punch tape to program and control his first Märklin model railway. Horst Zuse is still involved in developing innovative methods and approaches to this day. He sells an intelligent image search engine he developed himself: it gradually learns the user’s preferences and adapts search results accordingly. Anyone who has taken lots of photos on a lengthy holiday and wants to search through them in a large archive will quickly appreciate this function. “It’s just what my father was interested in: an innovation which helps solve problems involving large amounts of data.”
“In designing advertisements, the sheer quantity of information often poses a challenge to the ad creators,” explains Claudia Kaiser of IT2media. Content has to be presented concisely and memorably even when the material is complex, but of course the target groups want detailed information. With conventional online advertising, ad designers quickly reach their limits. The solution is simply to add a new dimension. IT2 media calls the idea “Online Advertising3“- for which it received the well-known VDAV Directory Media Prize in 2008. The discriminating jury not only praised the practical benefits and attractive look of this new advertising format but also the simple handling. “It’ very easy to fill the advertising space with your own material,” explains Claudia Kaiser. “If anyone is interested they can try it out for themselves at www.ad3d.de”.
Meanwhile Horst Zuse is very pleased with his new cube and is thinking about other innovations. One of his research focus areas at Berlin Technical University is the question of how software quality management can be improved. “I’m trying to quantify how well software can be maintained and understood,” he explains. “These are important factors for companies so that they can reliably estimate and minimise running costs.” Preparations for the Konrad Zuse year in 2010 are already in full swing, too. His father would have turned 100 and events will be organised to demonstrate to a broad public what an important part he played in the history of the computer industry. “You might call it ‘Anniverary3’,” says Horst Zuse with a laugh. Will there be an AD3D cube involved somewhere? “Wait and see!”
